Choosing and Installing a Boat Cover

Introduction

If you are storing your boat outside, you face a crucial decision: how best to protect the boat in a cost-effective way. Indoor storage can be cost prohibitive and even unavailable in some areas. This can make an investment in a winter cover for your boat is a decision that can pay dividends in safeguarding your investment. While a cheap cover can be tempting, there are drawbacks to this option as well. Below you can find our own experience in choosing and installing a winter cover.

Protection Against the Elements

Winter weather can be harsh, with freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and moisture posing significant threats to exposed boats. A winter cover acts as a barrier, shielding your vessel from these elements and preventing potential damage. Snow and ice accumulation can exert considerable weight on the boat's structure, potentially causing cracks, dents, or even structural failure. Moreover, moisture seeping into cracks or exposed areas can lead to mold, mildew, and corrosion, compromising the boat's integrity over time. A well-fitted winter cover provides a protective shield, minimizing the risk of weather-related damage and preserving your boat's condition. Vinyl seats and marine carpeting can be damaged enormously when exposed to outdoor elements, resulting in an upholstery repair job that can cost between $750-$2,000.

Prevention of Interior Damage

Beyond exterior protection, winter covers play a crucial role in safeguarding the interior of your boat. Moisture infiltration can wreak havoc on upholstery, electronics, and other sensitive components. Mold and mildew growth not only mar the appearance of the interior but can also pose health risks to occupants. Additionally, exposure to freezing temperatures can cause water to expand, potentially damaging pipes, fittings, and plumbing systems onboard. By keeping the interior of your boat dry and insulated, a winter cover helps prevent costly repairs and extends the lifespan of vital components.

Cost-Effective Maintenance

While the initial investment in a winter cover may seem daunting, it is a cost-effective measure compared to the potential expenses of repairing weather-related damage. Preventative maintenance is always more economical than corrective action after the fact. By proactively protecting your boat with a winter cover, you can avoid costly repairs, replacements, and restoration efforts down the line. Furthermore, preserving the integrity of your boat reduces depreciation and enhances its resale value, making it a wise financial decision in the long run. Selecting Your Cover

To select the best boat cover for you will want to match to ensure the style and length of your boat is correct. For instance, you will have too much cover and have pooling if you select a Runabout Cover for your Low-Pofile Cuddy Cabin I/O/O/B boat (as seen in the photos). Use this Carver Selection guide below to determine the exact SKU you will need for you boat. You can search for a wide selection of covers here. Most of the Carver Flex Fit covers carry a 3 Year Warranty to ensure peace of mind. Carver Flex-Fit selection guide

Installing Your New Cover

Once you have selected the correct cover for you boat, you will want to get it installed before any bad weather comes your way! You will want to start by finding the front of the cover and placing the front on the bow of your boat, as shown below. Carver Flex Fit winter cover installed on the bow a boat

You will then pull the cover back to your support poles. We highly recommend using support poles when installing a flex fit cover, as rain and snow can pool at low points on the cover without the support poles. There are several ways to ensure the support poles stay standing during wind and rain. A cheap way to do so is to take the seats from your boat to hold the base of the cover in place. A Taco Support pole being held in place by two boat seat cushions.

After installing the support cover, pull the cover gently over the support pole until the stern of the boat is covered as seen below.

As you can see from the photo, there is too much slack in the cover. If there was a heavy rain, it was pool up in the cover and pull it down, damaging the inside of the boat. You will want to attached the straps to the tie hooks and ensure that the cover is taut.

Conclusion

There you have it! A boat that is now protected from the winter elements and a cover that should be able to handle the winter elements. The importance of having a winter cover for your boat cannot be overstated. Beyond mere protection from the elements, winter covers safeguard your investment, preserve the aesthetic appeal, and extend the lifespan of your vessel. By shielding your boat from harsh winter weather, moisture, and UV radiation, a winter cover ensures that it remains in optimal condition year-round. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a first-time boat owner, investing in a quality winter cover is a decision that pays dividends in terms of peace of mind, maintenance savings, and the long-term enjoyment of your prized possession.
